further updations

"It arrived today!!!

And it looks grrrrreat.. except the cover is a little flimsy.
More like a magazine cover than a book. I'm a little upset by that cos I
wanted it to be all sturdy and firm. The stuff inside looks wonderful
though.. lovely crisp black print and yumm... I think basically I can get
away with anything, design-wise.

And so the work now begins..."

 - except from email from Peter (I hope he doesn't mind this).

quick update

OK - deadline reached. However, due to editorial disappearances, we might be able to sneak you in if you still want to submit.
Apologies and love,

Finally, we have some big news for you: a deadline.

A prototype is in the post, design pixies are making themselves ready and we need your submissions.  PLEASE submit before Friday 24th September, or your contributions will be shelved for the hypothetical (and vaguely possible!) volume two.  If you need any help deciding between a few please email me using the contact me link and not the submissions form; if you have your choices exactly ready then use the submissions form as usual.

Many thanks,
The Team

First and foremost, apologies for the delays (with cherries on top, and big puppy eyes).  Whilst the project is still very much going ahead, Diz has other commitments at present and is finding it hard to squeeze in time; as capable as I am (heh) there's only so much I can do without his publishing typesetting editorial skills.

Secondly, yes you can still submit!  I still haven't, and so there's no need to panic just yet.  Send us your wonderful words (although I should point out that they go to Diz's mailbox and therefore I won't be able to look at them until he's back).

Thirdly, sorry again.

Much love,

Blogs-Of-Beauty team (Anna)

PS from Dizville:

Patience! Stay tuned! News at 11!

Peeking behind the scenery

The BoB folder now contains 130 text files. And there's plenty more to come.

If you haven't submitted anything yet, don't fret. We'll let you know when the deadline approaches... At a wild guess I'd say 2 or 3 weeks. Then you can start to fret.

We had an editorial meeting last week. Sample pages were scrutinised and ideas whipped into shape with much excitement.

The demo book is nearly ready. It's not for public consumption, being mostly page after page of hastily tossed typefaces and scruffy pics. We need to see how far we can push the limits of a sweating digital press. Once the demo is in our eager grasp, book design can begin in earnest.

It's all going good.

Submissions form is up and running

Now we're getting somewhere. The Blogs Of Beauty submissions form is now live and (hopefully) kicking. Please use it to send stuff you want included in the book.

Because cut and paste is a pain in the ass (and the arse), I think it'll be easier for everyone if you just tell us the blog entries you want included and let us grab them ourselves. Give us the URLs (permalinks) on the form and we'll do the rest.

If you have non-blog writings you wanna include, use the form to copy+paste - or use the email address there to send via email.

The form is here. Please let us know if you have any trouble with it. We aim to pleeeze.

Snugs and benedictions... xx

Prototype in the pipe

Just had this back from CafePress:

... We recommend a dpi of no more than 600 for the contents and 300 for the covers. We print the contents in greyscale and the covers can be full color. We do not provide details about our printing methods to the public at this time. Text and such needs to be provided in black only. We can print to the edge, you are setting the margins prior to uploading the pdf to our server.

Have a great day!

Thanks, I will.

Yay, edge-to-edge printing. Stand by for some evil typography.

Hmmm... They print the mono pages in greyscale. That sounds vaguely encouraging as we want to include sketches and such. I'll spare you the techie details but this thing needs to be done RIGHT. Looks like I'm gonna have to make a mock-up book with sample pages, buy a copy and have it mailed over. That's the only way I can be SURE that our delicious designs will come out good. So bear with me on that. At least now I have some submissions to get my teeth into! : )))

Keep sending stuff folks... {and a special ooze of welcome to xaos, with red carpets and stoopid editorial grins}

More news soon. If yr not getting these updates via email, tie yourself to our mailing list immediately via the Register button. Or else complain. I'm taking the flak for this baby, heh heh.

Disorderly queues

This is incredible.. We're getting sooooo many people signing up for the book. Heh, we should charge admission...

Hopefully some copy should start trickling in soon. You don't have to send everything at once - our deadline is very flexible. But we're itching to start designing pages, so send what you can, in little packets tied up with string if you like.

If you're not sure what to submit, try sending us a great wad of stuff; your humble editors will sift through and attempt to pluck out the brightest gems - with much wild argument and throwing of breakable objects. Should be a lot of fun! *ducks coffee mug*

Enough is never enough. We're aiming to fill a book of about 150 pages. (Somehow!) That will make the cover price around $12 - give or take my dodgy mathematics. That's about £7 in English-type money. Delivery comes extra but it shouldn't make you wince unless you live outside the US - but hopefully we'll work something out there.

Does that sound like a reasonable price to you? Would YOU pay twelve measly dollars for such a work of art? Too expensive? Too damned cheap? Comments and price advice from the book-buying bloggers amongst you would be much appreciated.

I've had a wild idea for the book layout. Oh yes. But I'm not gonna breathe a word till the copy starts flying in.. so SEND YOUR STUFF.

Feel good factor: 9.6

Edit:  I want to thank each of you personally, as more and more wonderful writers join, but I really don't have time, I smell and have to shower before I go and get very drunk, so here it is: you are fucking awesome.  I really believe that this has the potential to blow people away.  Thank you.

What be Blogs of Beauty?

We're creating a book of blog.

A chunk of paper pages; printed and bound, sold and delivered. Something to hold in your hands or give as a gift. A book filled with the power of ink. Not just a work of art, but a collection of arts - an anthology... of dreams, despair, outrage, giggles, pain, sleaze, innocence, bitterness, love...

The writings of others have captured us. Scattered amongst the LOLs and Memes of blogdom there are people writing words of exquisite beauty. This book is a gathering together of those precious few who have in some way touched us. Perhaps you will touch us too.

Although we have our jealous eyes on a number of writers - who will be dragged screaming to the altar of publication with no mercy - we are also inviting submissions. You are welcome to send us your stuff. Perhaps you've always wanted to be published, perhaps it would look good on your resumé - or perhaps you just love the thought of your words resting on someone else's table and having coffee spilt on it. But before you run away with thoughts of fame, read on...

{Blogs of Beauty} is a self-published affair. We have no book deal, no distribution channels, no money for publicity or ultra-plush printing. If this thing takes off, who knows what the future may bring? But for now we are running on enthusiasm and the very real ability to MAKE it happen.

And make it happen good. Not just beautiful words, but beautiful design, beautiful print. We have the skills and the knowledge, and in this amazing age you don't need to print a thousand copies of anything. We're using Print-On-Demand technology via Cafépress - who will print us and bind us with their lovely digital machines - and deliver us anywhere in the world.

{Blogs of Beauty} will have an ISBN number, but it won't be available in your local bookstore. (At least, not yet!) Instead, we'll be selling it online. Not to make a profit (forget royalties, we're not doing this for the money), but to make it available. All contributors will get a discounted (or hopefully free) copy - and with any luck we'll be able to stretch to some review copies and such.

That's the story so far. And we'd value your help, support, thoughts.. Spead the word, send us your stuff, get as excited as we are. Being published is FUN! (Although the novelty soon wears off.. heh.)

And talk to us.
